    One of my favorite comments:
“Gritty? Edgy? Those all sound like aspects of war, so sure. Can’t wait for COD5: Warrior Within. “

When will it end? Never probably. Even though COD 3 got a mid 80’s review score and sold millions of copies, you would think that game raped and murdered the families of gamers everywhere.

I’ll be the first to admit that COD 3 wasn’t an awesome game, but it sure as fuck wasn’t as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

There was an article on Kotaku a few days ago about how some dev on Hellgate London wrote on his blog about work being depressing after the game was released and got pummeled by critics and gamers. I was thinking, “Yeah, I know how this guy feels.”

I wonder how CoD3 would have been received if it was an original IP and not CoD. Seems like most of the flak is from people being mad that it wasn’t up to par with CoD 2, a previous installment of the series. Then again, I’ve seen just as much shit thrown at original IPs that were mediocre (ex: Prey).

I think one big aspect of it is that Treyarch has no open dialogue with the gamer community. Infinity Ward does. Community stuff is expensive to maintain, but really worth it in the long run– gamers know who IW are, what they stand for, and know that their feedback is being considered. It also puts Call of Duty 2 and 4 in the company of the greater FPS enthusiast world (with Quake, Half-Life, etc.) Call of Duty 3 didn’t feel like a product of that fits in there. It just dropped in people’s laps with no context… from the Spider-Man guys, for all they knew.

I think COD3 gets the bad rap that it does simply because IW didn’t develop it. I don’t think most of the people who played it, and talk trash about it, didn’t give it one iota of a chance. Personally, I never cared for the COD series of games. I didn’t like how slow they were compared to Quake, UT, and even Wolf:ET. I will readily admit that the only reason I bought COD3 was to support heXum’s work.

However, after playing the game, I really did enjoy it. The feel of the game on the console was much better than on the PC (where I had previously played COD games). After adjusting to the controller, I found that the game is paced very well in regard to that type of input system. Until COD4 came out, COD3 was the game I spent the most time online playing.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, you will never please those who don’t want to be pleased. Those of us who aren’t rabid fanbois enjoyed the game (despite the wacky bugs ;) .
